Step 2
Open up the muffler. Remove debris, soot, rust or any other obstruction that could be causing noise.
Step 3
If the pipe is broken, take your car to a professional mechanic, but first, remove any parts that are about to fall off.
If you can’t twist off a loose part, secure it temporarily with a wire coat hanger. Wrap one end of the wire around the loose piece of muffler. Attach the other end to an immovable portion of your car’s bottom. Don’t, however, attach it to the drive shaft. This will somewhat reduce the noise until you can get to the repair shop. It will also prevent further costly damage.
Broken mufflers aren’t just noisy. They may also emit noxious fumes. Make sure yours is in good working order by checking it for loose straps, obstructions, or broken pipes regularly.
