A wheel sensor is employed to monitor the wheel speed on all four wheels. Information from these sensors is feed into the controller and it uses this information to prevent the brakes from seizing up during an emergency-braking situation. When you get an ABS light comes on it may indicate the sensor has become clogged. It is a good practice to check these often as the amount of stuff that can be picked up from normal driving can surprise you.

The heater core functions as a relatively small radiator that heats antifreeze that flows through it. A fan forces air to pass over the already heated antifreeze, which then passes into the interior of the car. In order for the heater core to function effectively, the heater core needs to be in good working order. If you notice some leakage under the dashboard in the passenger compartment, that is a sign that the heater core is faulty. You will need to replace it by taking the following steps. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal.
  2. Place a large container under the radiator drain plug. Open the plug to drain the coolant into the container.
  3. Separate the heater hoses from the engine compartment’s side of the firewall. Use a pair of pliers to loosen the clamps on the hose to disconnect it.
  4. Reach beneath the dashboard on the passenger side to remove the screws holding the rear cover of the heater core in place. You need a screwdriver to do this. Remove the heater core’s cover.
  5. Use the screwdriver once more to remove the heater core’s bracket retainers.
  6. Take the heater core away from its case and cowl.

The Cadillac CTS requires good synthetic oil as suggested by the manufacturer. GM Cadillac dealerships use Mobile1, but this is a pretty expensive oil. Valvoline has a great synthetic that works well and is a lot less expensive. It also meets the quality standards set down by GM. With a good synthetic oil GM claims that the engine can run well for a full year. It may be true but regular oil changes are in order the synths may not breakdown but they do get awfully dirty.

Items you will need are a torque wrench, owners manual, ball peen hammer, wood block, sealant, spray gasket remover, fender cover and a scraper. Most importantly the valve cover gasket.

1 Remove all the retaining nuts and keep them secure. You will find them all around the perimeter of the valve cover.

2 Take the cover off and remove the used gasket material. Clean the surface thoroughly.

3 Now with the utility knife you used previously remove all of the valve cover surface and the heads.

4 Use a degreaser and rag to the clean the entire surface of the area. Any debris left on will interfere with the sealing process.

5 The gasket only fits one way before applying pressure to make the seal make certain it is position properly.

6 Replace and tighten all bolts.

No matter how great your car is, driving it will be dangerous if you cannot stop it when needed. This is something that race car drivers are well aware of, and they concur that a car’s braking ability is more important than its ability to accelerate. No one enjoys veering off course, falling into a ditch, or hitting a wall.

Unfortunately, the braking system usually fails, more often than not, as a result of neglect. The problem is largely with the equipment rather than the driver. The culprit is usually worn braking pads.

Good friction pad depth is important for good performance, which means that you should regularly change the pads. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and go to work on relining your car’s brakes. Of course, this means that you need a plastic tool kit.

In order for you to change the braking pads when it is necessary, you need to learn more about the braking system. This article focuses primarily on the front braking pads, which account for 90% of changes required in this area.

A simple way of determining the wear on the brake pads is to look at them from outside of the front tire. Many cars allow you to see the brake pads via the openings on the outer parts of the rims or wheels. Seldom will you need to remove the wheels so as to see the pads.

Look at the outside pad from above. You will see it pressing against the metal rotor, which is shiny.

Once you have seen it, you have two ways of determining whether they need to be replaced.

Any pad that is less than a quarter of an inch thick needs to be replaced. Change them without delay if the depth is less than an eighth of an inch to prevent impending damage of the rotor. Of course, there are some slight differences depending on specific cars but this is a good rule of thumb. Read the rest of this entry

If you would like to jump-start your car, you should be aware that there is a slight chance of explosion taking place. When the battery loses its fluid and discharges, it produces hydrogen, which is flammable. This means that there is the possibility that a spark produced by the battery can set off the gas. However, this would only take place if the gas is relatively dense, which is not likely to be the case in many situations. Read the rest of this entry

The tires on your car enable you to drive smoothly. Unfortunately, you have probably noticed that they have a knack of losing air at some inconvenient spot. This effectively renders them unusable and you will need to change a flat tire.

Many people do not enjoy changing flat tires. Yet it becomes necessary, especially considering that not many of us have warning mechanisms for tire pressure or run-flat tires. However, knowing how to do it will make the process relatively less daunting and unpleasant.

When your car has a flat tire, you will need to look for the necessary implements – a spare tire, tire iron, and jack. The spare tire is usually found in different places, particularly in the trunk beneath the floor mat, at the back of your car’s tailgate, or underneath the car.

An air pressure gauge may also be necessary to determine the pressure on the spare car.

  1. Remove the spare tire from the vehicle.
  2. Then you will need to prepare to remove the flat tire. Set the emergency brake and ensure the car is in ‘park’ or gear. Ensure that the car is on a level and hard surface. You should preferably block the opposite tire to minimize chances of the vehicle moving as you change the tire.
  3. Loosen the wheel lugs using the tire iron before jacking the car. Turn them in the counterclockwise direction. Bring the jack beneath the car and find a good jacking point on the frame of the car. Then jack up the car until the flat tire gets off the ground completely. Remove the lugs and put them in a secure place.
  4. Then comes the physically tricky part: positioning the spare tire over the studs. You can find it easier when you balance it on your foot as you move it into proper position.
  5. Once the wheel hangs in position, start screwing the lugs back by hand until they are too tight before using the tire iron. Ensure that the wheel fits snugly against the brake hub.
  6. Lower the jack carefully and remove it once the wheel is back on the ground. Then tighten the lugs firmly in place.

Store the flat tire and be on your way home or to a nearby service station.

The braking system plays a very important role in the overall safety of a car. The more you use your vehicle, the further the brakes will be worn and eventually you will need to replace them.

Many cars use drum brakes on their rear wheels. This is whereby the braking pads are located inside a drum, which is in turn mounted on the wheel. Engaging the brakes cause the brake pads to push out, pressing against the drum’s inside parts.

You do not necessarily have to take your car to a mechanic to replace the drum brakes and brake shoes, as this is something that you can do by yourself with relative ease. This is especially good when you consider that it is part of the maintenance of your car that you need to do on a regular basis. Read the rest of this entry
